Gregory, Mack look back at UD’s blow-out
Dayton’s Brian Gregory and Xavier’s Chris Mack talked about the Flyers’ 90-65 rout of the Musketeers on the Atlantic 10 coaches teleconference today.
The Flyers were tremendous in all phases, particularly on the offensive end. They shot 56.4 percent from the field and 53.8 from the 3-point line, both season highs.
“It was a tremendous college atmosphere — as you’re starting to see more and more in this league,” Gregory said. “Just the prestige and national attention our league has drawn, watching more and more film, you’re starting to see not only great basketball in our league, but tremendous college environments across the board.
“For us, playing at home, we were able to feed off that energy. I thought our guys played with great intensity. We beat a very, very good team. We did a lot of good things. I always talk about our performance, and not necessarily the results. And I thought we took another step forward in playing better.”
Mack said his team didn’t do a good job of weathering an early storm.
“Dayton really, really came out of the gate. A big key was when it was 0-0 and Jason Love goes to the bench (with two fouls). For us, it became a different game early on,” he said. “But Dayton did an excellent job of pushing the ball. They’re a very quick athletic team. And before we could get off the mat, we were down, 17-3. We got into a hole we couldn’t get out of.”
Xavier has a bye this week before playing at Florida on Saturday, and Mack said those days off are coming at a good time.
“Any team would take a bye this late in the season. We’re physically and mentally bruised,” he said.

Chris Mack must not have much confidence in his ability to coach through challenges. Key moment at 0-0. Yeah. I understand Love’s importance, but he fouled on the first one for sure over the back and bumped Chris Johnson intentionally to send a message cutting through the lane on the second. Maybe did not need to get called, but does not matter, you got waxed coach…

If Mack’s team hadn’t come out looking to physically intimidate Dayton they wouldn’t have the foul trouble. Loves second foul was a shoulder block into Chris Johnson. Lurch Frease got his first foul with an elbow to Huelsman. Not only did the thuggish display not intimidate UD, it caused needless foul trouble. But what would you expect from a team coach by an angry guy like Mack?

“A big key was when it was 0-0 and Jason Love goes to the bench (with two fouls).” No Intern Mack, you are incorrect. Here are a few “big keys:” your team got annihilated on the boards (MINUS 18!!), you have NO offensive plan except for Crawford, Redford & Jackson shooting ridiculous 26-foot jumpers with 25 seconds on the shot clock, and lastly, you’re in way over your head and have no motivational skills. Does Mack actually think whining about the early calls and the officiating on today’s teleconference really changes the rump-bruising he absorbed on Saturday? He was a punk at Evansville, transferred to XU to continue his punkish ways, and he’s a 40-year-old punk NOW.

Yes, X got there butts kicked and played a poor game overall, however, UD should be careful to base too much on this win. UD has a good team but has faltered numerous times thus far this season and played better, in this game, than they have for most of the season. Both XU and UD will be there in the end along with Temple and maybe even Charlotte. Should be a good year fopr the A-10 when March Madness rolls around!

UD fans can’t even be gracious winners. Yes X lost this time but in the future, when this team has a chance to gel under Coach Mack and coupled with an outstanding incoming 2010 class, you will see utter domination by Xavier over the Flyers. One big win at the Arena doesn’t make a trend. The Flyers are posers and will remain posers. Hell, even bracketologists have Xavier a higher seed than UD in the NCAA tournament. (If UD makes it at all) You sorry UD hypsters are ridiculous.
