Count week winding down

“Count week” is winding down for Ohio schools.

There are two every year in October and February, when schools must report their enrollment by state law. The counts are tied to state funding.

It’s also been homecoming week for Middletown City Schools, and according to a news release from the district, families should remember that if their children miss school this week, they should send in a note. With an excused absence, a child can still be counted, according to the release.

“It’s very important that we count every student in our school district so we can collect all the money owed us from the state,” Price said in a news release.

“We encourage good attendance all year, but the first full week in October is especially important. Having your child in school every day that week will be very helpful for him/her and our whole school district,” Price said in the release.

“We realize that circumstances happen that may prevent your child from attending school. Before we can officially count a student who has been absent however, we must have a proper excuse,” Price said.

What does an ABC check cost?

I was a little surprised yesterday when my editor forwarded me an e-mail that said a school event would be offering “Games, snakes and punch…”

But a few seconds later I got another e-mail that clarified: “PTO will not be providing SNAKES at their Family Fun Night, but instead will provide SNACKS.”

The e-mail goes on to say the blunder is a perfect example of why we shouldn’t trust spell checkers.

Obviously, no one is perfect and mistakes happen (try as we might to avoid them.) But are today’s students learning enough spelling and grammar to get them through without an ABC check?

Do we rely too much on our computers?
