Lakota West High senior Jacob May has already signed to play for Coastal Carolina, but it appears the INF/OF will have a big decision to make come June.
That’s when the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft will be held, and May is getting quite a bit of attention from scouts.
“I’ve heard from a lot of scouts,” West coach Bill Dreisbach said. “I’ve received about 12 to 15 letters concerning Jacob asking for recommendations. That’s not so uncommon, but I know there’s a lot of interest.”
Last week at practice, a scout from the Angels watched May take infield and batting practice.
“Jake’s a guy who’s really got a legitimate shot of being drafted in the top 10 to 15 rounds,” Dreisbach said. “He’s got the tools, no doubt about it. It will be up to him and his family whether he’ll go to college or play pro ball.”
Last season, May was a first-team, all-GMC and second-team, all-state selection. He hit .423 with four home runs and 41 runs batted in.
May will move over to shortstop after starting at second base last year. He can also play the outfield.

Ironton is making its third appearance in the Final Four.
They lost to West Lafayette Ridgewood in the Class AA semifinal in 1980. And they lost to South Euclid Regina in the 2005 D-III regional semi.
The Tigers are from Lawrence County, at the very southern tip of Ohio.
To reach the state tourney, Ironton knocked off No. 3-ranked Oak Hill in the regional championship game.
Ironton was never ranked in any of the Associated Press state polls this season.

Defense wins ballgames and it’s certainly winning this Division III regional semifinal between Taft and Madison. Taft’s defensive pressure is giving Madison troubles. The Senators have a commanding halftime lead of 42-22.
At one point Taft broke an 11-all tie with a 19-0 scoring run to pull away. Madison was held scoreless from the final 1:59 of the first quarter on through the first four minutes of the second quarter.
Cameron Mitchell leads the Senators with 12 points, while his twin brother Kevin has 10.
Madison’s Mark Maloney and Josh Foster lead Madison with six points each.

Mason High junior Zach Wills is still more than a year away from joining a Division I cross country and track program.
But the three schools at the top of Wills’ list are Oregon, Stanford and Oklahoma State, Mason boys track coach Chip Dobson said.
Other schools, like Duke, Wisconsin and Georgetown, are also in the picture.
As a sophomore last spring, Wills won his second straight championship in the 3,200-meter race with a Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium record time of 9 minutes, 2.90 seconds. Then in the fall, Wills defended his D-I state cross country crown with a time of 15:45.11 at Scioto Downs.
Dobson also said senior Matt Kahl’s top three schools are Northern Kentucky, Butler and Kent State.
(Update, 9:35 p.m.) Wills did indeed say those three schools are at the top of his wish list, but he is no where close to making a decision.
In fact, he said he probably won’t announce his college choice until this time next year.
“Everyone’s still in the running right now,” Wills said. “Nothing’s official right now. There’s a wide range (of schools), but every runner wants to go to all those (three) schools. It’s a dream.”

The Madison-Shroder boys basketball game here at UD Arena should get under way somewhere in the vicinity of 10:20 p.m. A cheerleader injury during the Taft-Bethel game caused a 45-minute delay.

Madison’s boys basketball team will face Shroder Paideia for a Division III district championship here at the University of Dayton Arena tonight. If you’re sitting at your computer preparing for blog updates, the game will not be starting at 9 p.m. as scheduled.
We’re at the end of the first quarter in the game before Madison-Shroder, which is Taft vs. Tipp City Bethel. Taft leads 19-18, but we’re in a half-hour delay that isn’t over yet because a Bethel cheerleader went down in front of her team’s bench and is currently being looked at by medical personnel. The teams have been sent to their locker rooms and will get a short warmup period before resuming play.
I would say the Madison game won’t start until at least 9:45, likely later. I’ll keep you posted here on the blog.

SIGNING DAY

Rick Haynes was picked in late December to turn around the Lakota East High football program.
It appears he’s off to a good start.
About 85 to 90 players are participating in the offseason workout program, and Haynes said that “things are going great. The kids are working hard.”
Haynes said in January that he hired all of his assistant coaches except one — a wide receivers coach.
That hiring has been put on hold as Haynes is “just trying to find the right fit,” he said.

The final chapter of Robert Shepherd’s remarkable four-year wrestling career at Mason High was written this past weekend at the state meet.
Shepherd finished third at 140 pounds after winning the 135-pound title last year. He placed sixth at 112 pounds as a freshman.
Shepherd ended this season with a 43-1 record and his career mark at 152-18, including a 70-match win streak that was snapped on Friday night, March 5, in Columbus.
Shepherd — who will wrestle collegiately at Princeton — will graduate as the Comets’ all-time wins leader, 32 more than 2006 graduate Brian Porter, who is second with 120 victories.

Official softball practice began on Monday, March 8, for the 2010 season — the last for Mason High coach Brian Castner.
Castner was named the Comets’ new football coach back in November, thus making this softball season his final one at the helm.
“Everything is going great,” Castner said. “I am really finding out what the old saying means, ‘You are only as good as the people around you.’ Right now we are really good. I love my staff and our Mason kids.”
And it hasn’t affected his football responsibilities.
With softball practice in the afternoons, the Mason football squad is in the midst of an eight-week commitment workout schedule that runs from 5:30 to 7 a.m. every day.

As he enters Year Two of running the Fairfield High football program, Aaron Fitzstephens is pleased how the 2010 edition of the Tribe is shaping up.
Around 70 players attend each workout session, and last week was the Indians’ max week.
“Things are going really well this offseason,” Fitzstephens said. “Our team has made significant strength progress the past three months. We are very proud of their work ethic.”
Also, Fitzstephens said that any former Fairfield football player or coach who is interested in news about the program can email Fairfieldfootballalumni@yahoo.com.

Lakota West High senior guard Jordan Hicks saw his basketball career come to an end on Saturday night, March 6.
But not before he set a Lakota district record.
Hicks finished his career with a record 87 games played, including 81 starts. He missed only one game his entire four-year career, and that was for the Under Armour All-American football game in early January.
Hicks also holds the district record for career steals (170) as well as the West mark for steals in a game, steals in a season and steals per game in a season. Hicks is in the Lakota top ten in all five primary statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots) — a distinction he shares with just one other player, 1992 Lakota graduate Keith Gregor.
Hicks ranks eighth on the all-time Lakota scoring list with 1,062 career points.

“(The 4-1 lead after the first period) gave me something to work with. I didn’t have to worry about him being close or me having to scramble for shots. It feels great (to win in my first match ever at state). It’s nice to get the first one out of the way. Hopefully I’m come back tomorrow and wrestle better. I don’t feel like I wrestled my best right there. I’m pretty upset with how I wrestled. I felt like I let him control the tempo.”

Joe: “It feels good to get the first one under my belt. I definitely want to stay on the championship side (of the bracket). RICH: “I thought it was a good mach. We came in knowing that last year we were really, really close. So we’ve been working mentally all year long on making sure we get into the match, stay into the match and control the match. He did all of those. He got the escape midway through the second and then just kept the pressure on. The kid gave us an opening there at the end, and Joe took advantage of it and got that 3-0 lead. Lebanon High School’s boys basketball team won a share of the Greater Western Ohio Conference South Division title last weekend — without breaking a sweat.
The Warriors were the beneficiaries of Xenia’s 63-54 win over Springboro on Saturday, Feb. 27. The result of that game produced a three-way tie at the top of the South Division as all three teams — Lebanon, Xenia and Springboro — finished with identical 5-3 records.
“We are very pleased and very fortunate. Thank you, Xenia,” Lebanon High boys basketball coach Pat Murphy said. “I’m really happy for our seniors. We started off, as everybody knows, 0-7, but we stayed positive as a team and kept believing. It’s a tribute to their attitude, character and work ethic that they came back and put themselves in position to meet one of our goals. We had to win three games in four days, and then we needed help. We did our part, and thank goodness Xenia did their part.”
It marked the third year in a row that a Lebanon boys basketball team has won or shared a league title, the first time that has happened in school history. The Warriors finished the regular season with a 7-13 record and open Division I tournament play at UD Arena on Wednesday, March 3 against Springfield.
