VOA Learning Center is taking shape
I’m writing a story for the May 22, 2008 edition of The Pulse-Journal about Miami University’s efforts to coordinate its class offerings at the VOA Learning Center with the local community’s needs. During Friday’s meeting on the topic, I got some interesting info about the facility’s construction from Rod Nimtz, the center’s director.
First, it’s going to be really pretty.
If you’ve driven on Cox Road in the past few months, you’ve probably noticed the 23,000 square-foot center rising next to the entrance to VOA Park. It’s mostly ply, steel and Tyvek right now, but the general shape is discernable.
When complete, the building’s main entrance will face the park, rather than the road. Nimtz explained this is a nod not only to the site (which would you prefer to face, a park or a road?) but also to the possibility of future expansion - up to two more buildings over the next 20 years if needed.
The initial building will be able to support 230 students at any one time, and all classrooms will be fully multimedia connected, with projectors, broadband Internet access and multimedia control stations for the instructors.
Nimtz said that, although classes are scheduled to start in January, the building will be open for occupancy this fall. In the time between, the facility will be put to use to ensure everything is working as planned.
Once classes start, they’ll be scheduled Monday through Thursday and Saturday, with Friday left open for custom programming, such as educational seminars for companies or groups of professionals.
I’m interested to see how this new addition changes the face of the township. What do you think about Miami’s latest expansion taking place here?
