MASON — With budgets tightening as far as the eye can see, a vacation get-a-way seems to be harder and harder to come by. The Beach Waterpark in Mason aims to take over where your wallet shortfall left off.

The 35-acre park, which opens for its 25th season at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 16, is planning a host of new events and deals in conjunction with its silver anniversary celebration.

Still, there are the familiar palm trees, white sand, waterfalls, crashing waves and 51 rides and attractions including the Banzai (an 85-foot triple drop slide), The Cliff (a five-story freefall body flume), Aztec Adventure (the Midwest’s only water coaster) and Kahuna Beach Wavepool (the largest wave pool in the Midwest).

New this season are Cabana rentals offering guests private, sheltered seating with a cooler of complimentary drinks. Reservations must be made online prior to the visit.

One of the most notable tweaks to the Beach line-up is an expanded weekend concert series. Friday nights from July 3 through Aug. 14 will feature Surf Rockin’ Sounds at The Pearl. Saturdays from July 4 through Aug. 22 will see Salsa bands performing alongside Salsa dancers from the Fred Astaire Studios, who will be giving dance instruction to guests looking to learn some new moves. Reggae Fest will return Sundays from July 5 through Aug. 23.

Dive-In Movies will return every Saturday night when the sun goes down. Films will include “Kung Fu Panda” and “Twilight.”

It may not be the tropics, but for the price and the drive, The Beach is the next best thing.

Penny pinching

There are several ways to save money at The Beach Waterpark this summer. Here are a few worth exploring if you’re planning a trip.
