WEST CHESTER TWP. — Police are looking for three suspects involved in a robbery attempt that left a man bleeding from a gunshot wound to the chest shortly after midnight Sunday.

Jose L. Vargas, 33, was in the parking lot outside his home in the Cambridge Park Apartments off Crescentville Road when three black males approached and demanded his money, according to the West Chester Police Department.

All three men — described to be in their late teens or early 20s —were armed with handguns and one fired two shots, striking Vargas once in the left side of the chest, according to police.

Vargas, who admitted to police he was living in the United States illegally, was taken to Mercy Hospital Fairfield, where he was treated and released, said West Chester Twp. Police Chief John Bruce.

Police said the suspects then ran toward the Crescent Village Apartments.

Vargas described two of the men as tall and wearing black hooded sweatshirts, according to police. The third was shorter and wore the same type of sweatshirt, authorities said.

West Chester police said they are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the West Chester Police Department at (513) 777-2231.
