(HealthDay News) -- People with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may have symptoms including abdominal bloating and cramping, constipation or frequent diarrhea. While the cause of IBS often is unknown, some people seem to have a sensitivity to certain foods.

The National Women's Health Information Center lists these foods or ingredients that can cause IBS symptoms in some people:

  • Caffeine (found in sodas, coffee and tea).
  • Carbonated beverages.
  • The artificial sweetener sorbitol (often found in chewing gum).
  • Beans and vegetables that cause excessive gas.
  • Alcoholic drinks.
  • Chocolate.
  • Dairy products such as milk, ice cream and cheese.
