Grandma's Snow Cookies

Grandma's Snow Cookies were the ones Janet Graves Schmitt's Illinois grandmother used to make and share with 26 grandchildren. She called them Pecan Crispies, because they were made from the pecans from the tree in her yard, the one that family members harvested. An aunt makes sure the Bellbrook contestant has pecans from the same tree to make her grandmother's cookies, which are similar to Mexican wedding cookies.

Tasters called it "a really nice, old-fashioned cookie," and they liked the buttery flavor, and that's why butter, not margarine, should be used.

3/4 cup butter (do not use margarine)
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
Powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using a mixer, cream the butter until soft. Add granulated sugar gradually, beating well during each addition. By hand, stir in nuts and vanilla. Add flour and mix well by hand. Shape the dough into 1.5-inch logs. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet, approximately 1 inch apart. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Do not overbake. Remove from oven and immediately roll each cookie in powdered sugar. Place on a cooling rack. Cool and roll the cookie again in powdered sugar.
