Review the following 'Questions To Ask' about depression so you're prepared to discuss this important health issue with your health care professional.
Do I have depression? What kind of depression do I have?
Could my depression be caused by an underlying medical condition or by medications I'm taking?
Should I see a psychiatrist to determine if medication might help me?
(If medication is prescribed): How long before the drug begins to help me? How will I know that it is helping?
Is this medication safe for me to take given my current situation and any other medications I'm taking? Does it have any side effects I should be aware of?
How long will I need to keep taking this medication? Will I be able to stop taking it eventually?
Should I avoid other medications, alcohol or certain foods while I take this medication?
What if this medication doesn't work? Should I call you and come in for another visit before stopping the medication?
What if I can't tolerate the side effects of this medication? Should I call you and come in for another visit before stopping it?
Will you be counseling me or referring to me to counseling, as well as prescribing medication? What should I do if I believe I need counseling or other types of support?
Is the medication you're prescribing for me in any way addictive? Are there any substances, like alcohol, that I should stay away from while taking my medication?
What should I do if I find myself thinking of suicide?
