MONROE — Monroe’s offense struck early and often as the Hornets made short work of Waynesville on Monday evening, April 27, at Monroe.

The Hornets scored 13 runs in the first three innings of a 13-0 run-ruled win over the Spartans to improve their record to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in the Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division.

“We’ve been consistent. We haven’t been overpowering, we haven’t been dominant but we’ve been really consistent one through nine,” Monroe coach Bob Hunt said. “The kids have played hard, they’ve run hard and they’ve worked their butts off at every opportunity. That’s all you can ask from them.”

Monroe opened up the scoring when junior outfielder Jeff Haller laced a one-out triple to center field and scored on a passed ball. Senior third basemen Tyler Haskin followed with a double and scored on senior outfielder Jason Osterman’s single to right field to put Monroe ahead 2-0. Osterman stole second and advanced to third and scored on passed balls to make it 3-0 Monroe after the first inning.

The Hornets put the game away in the second inning by plating seven runs on six hits to extend their lead to 10-0. The inning started with the first six hitters getting on base as Monroe opened up a 7-0 lead. Senior Christian McElroy added two more runs with a one-out single and scored on a wild pitch to account for the final run of the inning.

Senior Matt Haddix’s three-run double in the third inning rounded out the scoring.

“We came out today expecting to win and we came out ready to win,” Haskin said. “We came through with big hits, so that helped.”

Waynesville (6-6, 3-3 SWBL Buckeye) was limited to two hits in five innings.

“They came out ready to play and we were flat,” Waynesville coach Jason Whited said. “Mature hitting teams take care of younger teams early and that’s what they did.”

The Hornets return to action at 5 p.m. today against SWBL Buckeye Division rival Madison.
