June has been a busy month for the Lebanon varsity boys basketball team.
Last weekend, the varsity team participated in the Moeller shootout, playing games against the host Crusaders, Roger Bacon, Taft, Milford and Winton Woods. The weekend prior, Lebanon hosted scrimmages with Columbus DeSales, Brookville and Fort Recovery.
“Those were two good weekends for us,” Lebanon coach Pat Murphy said. “The guys got to see that they could compete against an elite level of competition in this area.
“At this time of year, we just talk about getting better as players. The kids are doing that. We discovered that we have the ability to play with the best. We also discovered that we have a long way to go to get better. All of our weaknesses and deficiencies were exposed.”
The Warriors aren’t done honing their skills this summer. Today, June 18, Milford visits to play at 2:30 p.m. in Lebanon at the Junior High School. On June 23, the Warriors host Edgewood and Logan Elm for 1 p.m. scrimmages, and will host La Salle at 1 p.m. June 30.
Next month, the Warriors will visit Miami University team camp (July 1-2) and West Virginia University team camp (July 26-28).
The biggest event for Warrior basketball this month, however, isn’t a varsity level project. Murphy and Lakota East High varsity coach Wally Vickers have teamed together to co-host a 12-team junior varsity and freshman summer league.
Both schools hosted games Tuesday through Thursday evenings this week, and will again next week, culminating in a single-elimination tournament at Lakota East on Thursday night.
Lebanon also is hosting a freshman/junior varsity shootout June 20. Seventeen teams are set to compete.
