TROTWOOD — Lebanon High School swim coach Charles Darling was concerned depth would be his team’s weakness heading into the Greater Western Ohio Conference championships last weekend.
He also thought his top swimmers could hold their own against the best in the GWOC. Darling was right on both counts.
The Warrior boys and girls both took fourth in the South Division meet Saturday, Jan. 30, at Trotwood-Madison High School.
The next day, at the GWOC conference championships where the top finishers from the divisional meets competed, the Warriors fared better. The boys placed fifth overall in the conference while the girls tied for eighth.
“We scored better at the conference meet than we did in the South Division,” Darling said. “The kids did generally perform slightly better on Sunday, but really it comes down to the fact that our top swimmers can compete head to head with any other team in the conference.”
Senior Paul Skousen led the way for the Lebanon boys, winning two South Division championships.
Skousen set a new South Division record while winning the 100-yard butterfly in 54.67 seconds. He also took first in the 100 freestyle (50.52).
Lebanon’s only other individual champion in the South Division was Tim Early, who won the 200 individual medley in
2:08.95. Early also was third in the 100 butterfly.
The Warrior boys also collected five runner-up finishes, including two relays.
John Letarte took second in both the 50 and 100 freestyle , while Wyatt Thomas was runner-up in the 100 breast stroke. The 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay teams of Skousen, Letarte, Early and Thomas also both took second.
On the girls’ side, Liz Miller (100 butterfly) and Therese Stevens (500 freestyle) turned in the best finishes at the South Division meet. Each finished in third place. Stevens also finished fourth in the 200 freestyle.
Also placing in the top five for the Lebanon girls were Emily Zirkle (fourth in the 100 breast stroke, fifth in the 100 freestyle) and Courtney Bailey (fourth in the 100 back stroke, fifth in the 100 breast stroke). Lebanon’s 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams of Zirkle, Bailey, Stevens and Miller both placed third.
Springboro won the South Division, while Miamisburg was second. Centerville’s boys and girls swept the overall GWOC championship.
