SPRINGBORO — The Lebanon High wrestling team is re-charging its battery to get ready for the postseason.
After successive weeks in high-profile tournaments, the Warriors took on a lighter load last weekend, wrestling Belmont and Hamilton in a tri-match at Springboro on Saturday, Jan. 23.
“We really just wanted to get a cycle of competition in as we prepare for the Greater Western Ohio Conference tournament,” Lebanon coach Aaron Gibson said. “At this point, we just want to get healthy and get as mentally and physically prepared as possible for the post-season.”
The Warriors swept the match with Belmont and beat Hamilton, 54-28.
Five Lebanon wrestlers won both matches on the day, led by 160-pound senior Stephen Bowling.
“Stephen beat a district placer from last year and was pretty impressive,” Gibson said. “He wrestled smart. He used his single-leg attack and wrestled well on top. He put his guy in the cradle, put him on his back and kept him there.”
Also winning both of their matches for the Warriors were freshman Dean Broderick (189 pounds), junior Treg Logsdon (130) and sophomores Eddie Noble (103) and Seth Gilbert (119). Noble improved his team-best record to 17-4 on the season while Gilbert improved to 17-6.
Lebanon also got a solid performance from sophomore Kameron Maupin at 152 pounds. Since moving into the starting line-up, Maupin has won five of six matches.
“He’s starting to make a name for himself, and we’ve needed that lift after losing Jordan Ridgely to injury,” Gibson said. “Getting to full strength is our main concern with the GWOC meet coming up.
“When the league tournament starts, everyone gets a clean slate. Right now, if we wrestle well, I’d put us in the top eight at league, but we have to wrestle very well to get into the top five which is our goal.”
