MIDDLETOWN — Through 10 games this season, the Middletown High School football team has scored 401 points.

That ranks second all-time in team history to the 1962 team coached by the legendary Glenn “Tiger” Ellison.

Ellison’s 1962 squad totaled 434 points, including a 98-point game against Portsmouth and a 70-point game against Greenhills.

This year’s Middies scored 61 points twice this season (against Lima Senior and Mason).

Welcome back

Middletown hasn’t qualified for the postseason since 1990, a 19-year drought.

Only one other team that qualified for this year’s playoffs has had a longer hiatus. Galion, which competes in Division IV, Region 14, last made the playoffs in 1989, one year before the Middies’ last appearance.

For Carlisle, it’s been five years (2004) since they played in the postseason, while Monroe was last in the playoffs in 2007. Valley View was a playoff team last year.

Tournament records

Of the 192 teams competing in this year’s state playoffs, only 14 have more postseason wins than the Spartans.

Valley View is making its 16th playoff appearance and has a 30-12 tournament record that includes three state championships (1994, ’96 and ’97).

Monroe is 10-7 in postseason play, including a pair of state semifinal appearances in 2005 and 2007. Middletown is 3-3, and Carlisle is 0-4.

Cleveland St. Ignatius has the most tournament wins of anyone in this year’s field with 55.

Congratulations Middletown Middies. Great season.

The story doesn't imply Monroe had no other Semi-Final appearances, it just says, "including a pair of state semifinal appearances in 2005 and 2007". Duh!

Monroe lost in the semi finals to Celina in 1983.

People seem to forget that Monroe made the post season and advanced to the state semi finals in 1983.
Someone needs to do better homework.

Fantastic season for the football team!!! Great defense this year. Was worried a little that first half against Princeton. Middies looked a little flat, but woke up the second half. Princeton players looked demoralized. Saw Moeller play St. X. Based on Middletown's second half performance at Princeton and the Moeller performance, should be a good game. Oh, we've got to get rid of that dorky Middie mascot. Mercy! Let's get us a wicked, evil-looking magician/sorcerer for the mascot! LOL
