Waynesville High School football coach Glen Burchfield bills tonight’s Oct. 23 game with Monroe as the rubber match.

The winner of the Waynesville-Monroe game has claimed the Southwestern Buckeye League’s Buckeye Division title in each of the past two years, and tonight’s game on the Spartans’ home turf will be no different. Monroe won at Waynesville in 2007 to win the title. The Spartans returned the favor last year at Monroe.

“It seems as though 2009 is the rubber game, especially since Monroe is moving to the (Southwestern) division of the league next year,” Burchfield said. “It’s going to be a great game.”

Both teams favor a ball-control offense and both have several weapons at their disposal.

Monroe (7-1, 4-0 SWBL Buckeye Division) enters tonight’s game in the driver’s seat as far as the divisional title is concerned.

The Hornets’ top offensive threat is running back Devin King, who already has a 1,000-yard rushing season under his belt. Through eight weeks of play, King has gained 1,267 yards and has scored 16 touchdowns.

Similarly, Waynesville (6-2, 3-1) has a workhorse at running back in senior Seth Millar. Millar holds 10 school records, recently surpassing the 5,000-yard rushing mark for his career. Millar and quarterback Cory Young have provided quite the 1-2 punch for the Spartans.

“Seth Millar is a person we need to be accounting for in every situation, and they have an extremely talented QB in Cory Young, who is a very good player and is dangerous with the ball,” Monroe coach Ken Meibers said. “They are a very strong, physical, fast and quick football team across the board.”

Just as the Hornets will have their eyes on Millar, the Spartans will be watching King.

“Stopping Devin King is the key for us, and truthfully, it is the offensive line that is most impressive,” Burchfield said. “They come off the ball as well as anyone we’ve seen for a long time.”

Waynesville lost to Carlisle in Week 4 for their only divisional blemish of the season. Monroe nipped Carlisle 21-17 in Week 6, which happens to be the Indians’ lone divisional loss.

A Waynesville win and a Carlisle win tonight against Preble Shawnee, could create a three-way tie atop the Buckeye Division. A Monroe win clinches the outright title for the Hornets.
