OAKWOOD — Waynesville High’s girls basketball solidified its status as a high seed in the upcoming Division III tournament last weekend.
The Spartans went on the road and beat a solid Oakwood team, 50-48 on Saturday, Jan. 23.
The nonconference win was one of the better ones of the season for the Spartans, who improved to 11-3 on the season.
“Oakwood’s good,” Waynesville coach Tim Gabbard said. “They lost some games early because their starting point guard was out with an injury, but back at full strength they’re tough to beat.
“It was a great game, very well played by both teams.”
The Spartans raced to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter. Amber Bell led the way, sinking a trio of three-pointers. She finished with a team-high 18 points.
Oakwood (7-8) cut the lead to a point by halftime, and the Spartan lead was only three at 40-37 heading into the fourth quarter.
“The best thing about this game was we didn’t lose our composure when they came back on us,” Gabbard said. “We withstood the storm and hung in there.”
Waynesville sank critical free throws down the stretch — Bell made four and Jessie Klan added a pair — to hold on for the win.
Bell added five steals and five assists to go with her 18 points, while Lauren Bunn scored 16 points and had four steals. Jessica Dahnke grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Spartans’ in that category.
“That was definitely one of our better games,” Gabbard said. “We talked and moved on defense and played with a lot of intensity.
“We’re able to take a lot of positives out of this game.”
Waynesville returns to the court tonight, Jan. 28, when they visit Northridge. On Saturday, the Spartans get another good barometer of their tournament-readiness when they visit Bellbrook, who entered the week with a 10-3 record.
