WAYNESVILLE — Oakwood didn’t make a field goal in the fourth quarter at Waynesville Friday night.
They didn’t need one.
The Lumberjacks scored 16 points at the free throw line in the final period to hold off a charging Waynesville squad for a 65-61 win in a Southwestern Buckeye League cross-over game on Friday, Jan. 29.
Oakwood (7-7) saw a 15-point lead whittled to three by the Spartans, but sank 8-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes to hold on. Junior forward Ryan McFarland scored all 13 of his points in the second half, including 5-of-6 free throws in the last 1:09 to secure the win.
“In the past couple of games, we’ve knocked them down in the fourth quarter,” McFarland said. “That’s been the reason for our recent success. We were able to fight the crowd and get in our zone.
“In the pre-season, free throw shooting was a weakness. But, coach (Paul) Stone makes us shoot free throws every day and for every miss we run. So, we learned not to miss them.”
Waynesville (5-9) put Oakwood in a position to have to make free throws with a furious fourth quarter rally.
Trailing by 15 at the start of the period, the Spartans twice had possession of the ball while down only three, but turned it over both times.
“We dug ourselves a big hole, which is something we do too often,” Waynesville coach Cory Crozier said. “But we fought back hard and had a chance.
“It’s wrong to look at any one play or possession at the end of the game as a reason for this loss. It’s what we did in the second and third quarter that put us in that hole. I don’t want to talk about what could have been different at the end of the game. Instead, we should think about what should have been different earlier in the game.”
Over the second and third periods, Oakwood outscored the Spartans 32-19.
Oakwood built its big lead on three-point shooting. The Lumberjacks sank seven treys in the first three quarters, three by Scott Feldmiller who led all scorers with 19 points.
Waynesville had four players in double figures, led by Chase Gianattasio who scored 16.
