Ford Fusion is gaining on more-familiar midsize sedans

When it comes to midsize sedans, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord rule the category. Each, though, had better consider baseball legend Satchel Paige’s advice: “Don’t look back, something might be gaining on you.” That something is the Ford Fusion.

A makeover has made the Fusion more visually appealing. So, too, are two new versions for 2010, a gas/electric hybrid and the model we drove, the Sport.

The Fusion Sport comes with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with
263 horsepower. Paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift capability, this Fusion rocks. Quick and responsive, the sport suspension helps bring control to the driver.

The Sport version adds a nice array of amenities beyond the beefed up engine and sport suspension. There is leather upholstery, an 8-way power driver seat, wireless cell phone link, iPod adapter,
18-inch tires (16-inch tires are standard) and a rear spoiler.

Inside, there are some interesting color choices to make. Our tester had Sport Blue seat inserts, which matched trims
and dashboard back
lighting. This could bring a love-hate relationship from members of the same family, but it will get everyone’s attention.

What also sets the Fusion apart is the availability of all-wheel drive, which when included with the Sport package becomes the most expensive of seven trims at $28,030. That’s reasonable for all that is included.

Even with an extensive option package that had some nice amenities like power moonroof, rear-view video camera, blind-spot detection with warning lights in the side mirrors and heated front seats, the final sticker was less than $33,000.

That’s a number that will get the Ford Fusion plenty of attention.
