Amy Barr of Harrison Twp. has a favorite strategy for saving money — utilizing coupon sharing groups online.
Barr said she uses the sites for many things — trading packets of coupons, finding rebates, creating wish lists and getting other items at a discount that you might not be able to find in the area.
Barr, who learned to save money from her mom, said she saves “$100 to $200 per week on average” with her couponing efforts.
The online coupon sharing groups she frequents include All-American Coupon Train, Our Coupon Cafe and a local one — the Dayton coupon sharing component of the Free Cycle Web site.
These sites, and others like them, can be found by searching on Google.
Free Cycle is all about reusing and sharing things to help the environment.
Most of the sites advertise that they are not only places for sharing coupons, but also places for sharing tips and friendship.
Barr noted that it is good to have the local Dayton group, and it is helpful to take part in the nationwide ones, as well.
“Different areas of the country have different coupons due to the (varying) costs of living,” she said.
She added that she does a great deal of stocking up.
“Recently Cub (Food) had a 10 for $10 sale on tuna, and I had 26 coupons. ... I ended up getting them for free,” she said, adding that the items her family doesn’t need are donated to the food pantry.
Barr said her favorite grocery stores are Kroger and Meijer, and she said she shops at both of them every week to get the best deals.
