ST. CLAIR TWP. — Alcohol is being cited as a factor in a crash which caused a tractor-trailer to spill fuel near the Great Miami River, shutting down traffic for hours Sunday night.
A Hamilton man was injured after he crashed his pick-up truck into the fuel tank of a tractor-trailer, creating a spill that shut down Wayne-Madison Road just north of the Woodsdale Bridge.
The crash tore a hole in the underside of the tractor-trailer's 250-gallon fuel tank, which was nearly full, said St. Clair Fire Chief Terry White. Officials were concerned the fuel leaked into a creek leading to the Great Miami, according to Local 12 WKRC.
David Hundley, 40, was northbound at 8:20 p.m. Sunday, May 11, when his vehicle went left of center and struck the southbound tractor-trailer driven by Michael Lynn, of Cincinnati, according to Butler County Sheriff's Office deputies.
Emergency crews used the jaws of life to free Hundley. He was taken to Atrium Medical Center, where he was later cited for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and driving left of center, said Sgt. Randy Lambert.
Hundley's condition was unavailable Sunday night. Lynn, 41, was uninjured.
Andy Crawford and his brother Joe Crawford were driving behind Lynn and saw the crash happen.
"It was his first night on his route. That's what he told us," said Andy Crawford, who spoke with Lynn after the crash.
"It's ironic," he added. "I was just telling him (Joe) wrecks always happen through here and then one happened right in front of us."
Firefighters from St. Clair, Liberty and Madison townships pumped the remaining fuel out of the tank and late Sunday night were still working to clear the road.
Wayne-Madison Road was closed south of Woodsdale Road during the clean up.
