Friday, February 01, 2008

The Warren County Sheriff's Office is joining other Ohio law enforcement agencies in providing additional patrol units on the roads the entire Super Bowl Weekend, Feb. 1-4, to enforce traffic violations.

The Sheriff's Office received a Select Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant from the state of Ohio in September. Throughout the next year, the STEP grant funds will be spent on a number of holiday "blitz" efforts to reduce traffic fatalities. The Sheriff's Office will target specific areas of enforcement, primarily DUIs, speeding and seat belt violators.

"We want drivers to enjoy this great sports weekend but please be mindful of how much they are drinking," Chief Deputy Larry Sims said. "There are historically a number of drunk drivers on the roads on Super Bowl weekend. We would rather they seek their own safe driving remedies than have us intervene."

The Super Bowl blitz begins on Friday, Feb. 1at noon and will run through Monday, Feb. 4 at midnight. Drivers who are attending Super Bowl parties are encouraged to seek alternative transportation such as designated drivers or cabs rather than drink and drive.
