Lebanon City Council on Tuesday night, April 22, acknowledged the crunch of multiple roadwork projects clogging downtown roadways while planning for additional work later this year.

Council approved agreements to provide construction plans for water main replacements along sections of DeSales Avenue, Deerfield Road and West Street. The construction on DeSales and Deerfield is slated to for late 2008 or early 2009. West Street will be worked on in early 2009. They also empathized with businesses and residents travelling through the rocky roads of downtown Lebanon.

"There's a lot happening all at once," said council member Jim Norris. "But there is logic to what we do, and it will be wonderful when it's done."

Downtown has been jammed by the closing of Silver Street for seven months for complete reconstruction and water main replacements on Broadway and Mulberry that has restricted parking and cut traffic to one lane in areas. Broadway and Mulberry are expected to be completed within the next two to three weeks. Silver Street is scheduled to reopen in September.

City Manager Pat Clements said the construction was planned to complete as much work before summer and fall seasons, which are busier for businesses. He said there also is a relatively small window in which asphalt plants operate.

"There's a lot going on, and we're very appreciative of the patience of the downtown merchants,"

Clements said.
