Making downtown a destination
Thursday, May 08, 2008
Mayor Tom Grossmann flipped the switch on downtown Mason street lights this week, and businesses shed light on what they feel still is needed to create a downtown destination.
What's new in and around downtown?
Extras
• The nearly complete plaza and brick paved streetscape;
• The new and contemporary offices of the Northeast Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce;
• Main Street Sweets is in the process of moving from its location across from St. Susanna to a building next to Hardin Dental.
• The Wildflower Café and Coffee Shop will open soon just east on Main Street;
• Ohio Gems and Beads on Main Street is gone.
What's pending?
• A possible clock tower or other attraction for the new plaza;
• A new restaurant to fill the space in the restored former municipal building where the One Restaurant & Lounge went out of business;
• High-Five Development's plans for a new office/condo/retail development at Main Street and Northwest Street.
As for current businesses, they need help to survive and thrive. Sally Gasior, owner of Tea Roses located on Main Street, is struggling.
"It definitely hasn't started to bloom," she said. "It's spring, we're supposed to be blooming here, and I don't see it happening here. I need other businesses here so it's a destination place."
