Pirate party hopes to shiver the timbers of a new home

On Saturday night, pirates will be giving back to the community rather than plundering.

The Warren County Women's Charity Organization is hosting the Pirates in Paradise Party from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Warren County Fairgrounds in Lebanon. All proceeds from the annual dance — which has a buccaneer theme this year — benefit Habitat for Humanity. The WCWCO's goal is to raise enough money in one evening to build one house.

"We are so fortunate in this county to have such an active chapter of Habitat that has successfully built a beautiful community of homes for the needy," said WCWCO President Sonya Staffan.

The party will feature Cincinnati-based band The Menus and plenty of floor space for dancing. Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to dress in pirate garb (sadly, no live parrots are allowed). There also will be a silent auction of items donated by local businesses and a raffle for a golf package. No alcohol will be served, but guests are allowed to bring their own.

"I think it's great we live in a community where people support each other and welcome economic diversity," said local Habitat fundraising chairman Keith Taylor. "It's just a nice way to help each other out."

The WCWCO has been active for eight years. Every year since its inception the group targets a local charity to benefit with its annual dance. It has raised more than $87,000 for local civic groups including the Warren County Drug Task Force, the Warren County Animal Shelter and the Abuse and Rape Crisis Center.
