West Theatre
awards scholarships,
honors colleague
On May 10, Lakota West Theatre presented the Nancy Goodwin Performing Arts Scholarships to Lakota West seniors Megan McGill and Ryan Slone. This presentation marks the first time West Theatre has presented a scholarship, which was established in memory of West Theatre's founding choreographer who last spring lost a battle with breast cancer.
Slone, who was awarded a $2,000 scholarship, will attend the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music and major in music education.
McGill's $1,000 scholarship will aid in her vocal performance studies at Miami University.
In addition to the scholarships awards, West Theatre has committed to a $500 donation to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The scholarship was presented at "Broadway Bound," an evening of song and dance featuring students from Lakota West's Musical Theatre Revue along with West theatre alumnae. The event raised funds for the scholarship as well as the breast cancer donation.
Nancy Goodwin, for whom the scholarship is named, choreographed for Lakota West Theatre from 1997-2000 and served as a mentor for West Theatre artistic director Kim Tanis. Tanis cited Goodwin as an influence on her work with West Theatre. Goodwin also worked with current West Theatre choreographer Christy LoBuono Munafo when Munafo was a Lakota West Theatre student.
The scholarship is awarded to a senior involved in West Theatre who intends to major in any of the following areas: dance, vocal performance, theatre arts, technical theatre, acting, musical theatre or education in any of the aforementioned areas. The scholarship is based on talent, scholarship, character and service. The scholarship is presented with support from the Drama Mama and Papas, West Theatre's parent booster's organization.
