A rebuilt Turtle Creek Flea Market is on schedule to open in mid-November with a new name and theme after a June fire damaged 50 percent of the facility.
The flea market, on Garver Road in Monroe, will be billed as "Treasure Aisles, the barrrgain hunter's paradise." The interior will be pirate-themed in the expanded main dinning area with bright colors, said Greg Dove, president of Levin Associates, which owns the flea market.
Tropical island and pirate ship murals also will be painted at the end of the six buildings that make up the market, he said.
In the refurbished main dining area, Dove said the aisle floors are being treated with an epoxy coating featuring a waterway and beach with hammerhead sharks, turtles, stingrays, star fish, crabs and sand dollars. Ice cream and donuts also will be sold at Shiver Me Timbers Frozen Treats and Yo Ho Donuts stands, he said.
The area also will have a game room and Captain Jack's Snack Shack, which will feature pizza and plunder or funnel cakes.
Advertising agency BGH Studios of Dayton was hired by Levin to help it rebrand the market. The company came up with the new name, he said.
The name is being changed because the flea market has changed, Dove said.
"The main folks that we compete with are the big-box discount stores and Internet sites like eBay, and things like that. And to compete with those things, you've got to offer more than just good prices because you can get that by just a click," he said.
"What we want to do is what we term retail-tainment ... so that we provide more of a fun experience for people to come out and shop."
He said the name change also lets the community know that the flea market wants to be a part of the positive things happening in the area.
A 14- by 48-foot billboard showcasing the market's new name will be erected on the site and visible from Interstate 75. About 25 percent of the billboard, which will provide market and community information, will feature an LED screen, officials said.
The 126,000-square-foot flea market sustained heavy smoke, fire and water damage in a June 12 blaze. There is still no final damage assessment for the fire, which Monroe Fire Chief Mark Neu said is believed to be electrical.
The fire caused an estimated at $2.5 million in damage to the structure and the content of the vendors' booths, Dove said. About 85 to 90 percent of those vendors plan to return to the market, Dove said.
How to go

EVERYTHING in life is what you make of it but as for flea Markets. I’ve never really gone to them until coming to Ohio and I took a job at one and it truely is a great place to be. I go to work every day happy and watch the management staff killing themselves to keep the riff raff vendors and people out so those of you that are normal can have a good time. I get to see new things every day and work with a happy staff in a great place. Try it you might like it…

Woefully, the explanation is typically an approximation that is so effortless it would simply necessitate a brief moment of time to put into position, but is generally left out.

If you don’t like foreigners perhaps you should move back to the plantation- I thought this country was the melting pot of the world. As far as flea markets go, I heard that Turtle is under new management. We went there a couple of weeks ago, and even though part of the building was closed because of the fire, the market was busy, and we ate at the new outdoor food court and listened to a great band for free. I for one will go back. Everyone was nice and we had fun.

You would think the owner would help out the vendors that lost everything instead of pirate junk. What about going after the guy that had a power strip overloaded that started the fire to begin with or tell everyone how much was paid to the fire inspector(s)to say that the fire walls worked when they didn’t. What a joke!

I do go to Turtle Creek about every other week. I admit very little changes from week to week as far as selection in “most” dealers but occasionally you may find something out of the ordinary. A quick line about the dealers - most are friendly and eager to make an honest buck. I have made good friends with a few of them & try to haggle the price at Wal-Mart or a big chain store -ain’t gonna happen! In closing I just wanna say, flea markets are OK to buy occasional odds & ends.

Garbage, both of them. At Traders World you have to enter the gate with that old wrinkled handed lady if whom is as rude as it gets for a good time pay her a large bill like a 50 or a 100 and watch her get ticked off i gave her a 100 dollar bill once and i got in for free. If you go to turtle creek it is Little Havana. So many foreigners. Go there with your wife or girly friend and watch how she gets eye rapped raped by all of them and dont use the crapper unless you want the hiv!

This isn’t emailing, it’s a message board. Not typing or punctuating is a style? Wow, I didn’t know “dumb” was a style. You keep commenting and sounding even dumber. It’s “too”, not “to”, as in you’re “too” stupid to understand the difference. No, I have a professional career, in an office, and yes I drank beer. Go get a keyboard where the shift key works so you can use capitals. You probably think the capital of Montana is Hannah.

I’ve gotten some really great antiques at flea markets for very little money. I’ve restored some and use them in my house, others I’ve resold for a profit. I can spend $20 and make $100. A 500% return is pretty good in any economy.
Plus, it’s fun to sort through the junk looking for something wonderful.

Patience, bojangles. This comment board is slow sometimes. And what’s wrong with drinking beer, working in a mill or driving a truck? There can be nobility in simplicity as well as crass boorishness among the so-called “culturally elite”. These boards really aren’t a place to judge anyone. Never stopped anyone, though. Chances are you can find something at any flea market that you could use, and for a great price. If you’re (not a specific you) not above trying new things and places, go.

Google “counterfeit flea market” and you’ll get nearly 53000 hits. Yeah, you should work for the DA’s office since you can tell a counterfeit CD or T-shirt from the real thing. Yeah, right! And Monroe is a high-class area, right next to the Hustler store. I’ve heard it all, now. Hasta la vista!

TRADERS WORLD IS THE BETTER PLACE. YOU SAY YOU BUY DVDS FOR $5 EACH AT TURTLE CREEK. WE PAID $10. AND GOT 4 DVDS AT TRADERS WORLD. THATS ONLY 2.50 EACH. HALF THE PRICE YOU PAY. AND NO THEY WERENT BOOTLEGS! NOT TO MENTION THE CHICKEN! THE ONLY THING ABOUT TRADERS WORLD I HATE IS THAT GOD AWEFUL MUSIC THEY PLAY!

You need to go to these places with eyes wide open. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. But for fun gifts and unusual items it’s great. I’d go more if I had the time and a better car. I hate the places that buy the stuff at Goodwill Warehouse and resell them for 10 times the price. I go to Goodwill regularly and you’re not fooling me. And besides, you p**s me off when you break 20 things going through the bins and throw things or put bowling balls on top of glassware.

Actually, Turtle Creek is a great place to buy many items, like DVDs for example. We pay $5 there compared to new ones or used ones other places with higher prices. They also have good produce when it’s in season. It’s fun to walk around and see what is out there….remember another man’s trash is another ones treasure

I go there because I like the exercise of walking around and I enjoy talking to a variety of people. I also enjoy collecting carved birds. Actually the only place in this area where you can find carved birds is the flea market. In response to “tbill”, I am not white trash. I have a masters degree and I have been teaching Spanish for 40 years at a local High School. Flee marketing is fun and I don’t buy counterfeit anything.

Queen, I’m assuming you are a racist to boot. The United States is not the only country on this wonderful Earth. There are many other countries with many different people. Have you ever taken a Geography or American history class, or are you completely uneducated? What makes you think that you are not a foreigner here anyway? Regardless, the new concept of a themed flea market is neat. I may stop by one day.

How about this for a new name: Counterfeit Corner. That place is best known for selling fake/counterfeit merchandise and ought to be shut down. Why don’t I shop there? Because I’m not White Trash.

Haven’t been to turtle creek for years. When we do go, we usually just go to Traders World because it is bigger and we don’t have the time or energy to due both. We can’t go as oftens as we would like due to distance (56 miles) and busy weekends but we try to go 1-2 times/year. It is always a fun time when we do go.
