SPRINGBORO — Springboro Community City School District provides a free appropriate public education for all students.

For students who are at risk and having difficulties with academics and/or behavior, the first step is to meet with the Intervention Assistance Team to develop a plan to help the student. If the interventions are successful this may be all that the child requires and no assessments are needed.

However, after attempts with interventions, if they are not successful, the student may be referred to be assessed through the Multi-factored Evaluation process. Once this assessment is complete, the team will reconvene to discuss results and determine if the student qualifies for special education based on state regulations. If it is determined that the child qualifies, an Individualized Education Plan will be written by an intervention specialist with input from the team which includes the parents/guardians.

Springboro Community City Schools services students who have varying abilities. Based on state regulations we have students identified under specific labels. As of Dec. 1, 2007, we were servicing the following students:

• Eight students with the label of multiple disabilities.

• One student with the label of deafness (hearing impairments).

• Seven students with the label of visual impairments.

• 90 students with the label of speech and language impairments.

• 10 students with the label of orthopedic impairments.

• 17 students with the label of emotional disturbance.

• 18 students with the label of cognitive disabilities.

• Two students with the label of traumatic brain injury.

• 22 students with the label of autism.

• 112 students with the label of other health impaired minor.

• Three students with the label of other health-impaired major.

• 295 students with the label of specific learning disability.

• 71 students with the label of preschoolers with a disability.

Based on the needs of the child, the IEP is developed and the team determines what the least restrictive environment is so that the child can be with typical peers as much as possible. Some of these placements range from resource classroom (self-contained classroom) to being fully included in the regular classroom with minimal supports.

Other services that are offered based on student need are the following: orientation and mobility, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, audiological services, interpreter services, nursing care, special transportation, educational support, and work-study services.

These decisions are part of the MFE and IEP process.

The overall goal of Springboro Schools is to provide an appropriate education for all students regardless of ability and/or needs.
