A classic love story for Valentine's Day
Thursday, February 08, 2007
It's a classic love story. The cheerleader adviser and the head football coach meet and fall for each other in the high school halls. That story played out at Lebanon High School, where Warriors cheerleading coach Bethanie (Landis) and football coach Shawn Lamb met seven years ago.
Both teachers in the social studies department, Shawn and Bethanie were friends for six years before their first date, the night of Lebanon High School's 2005 graduation.
"This sounds kind of dumb, but we were just perfect for each other," Bethanie said.
"Our friendship really carried over into our relationship," Shawn added.
Now, the Lambs are enjoying their first year of marriage and preparing for a new addition to the family — due on the night of the Warriors' first football game next season. Their shared love of teaching and being leaders in the school — Bethanie is also the student council adviser and Shawn serves as the weight room coordinator — created a strong bond.
"Lebanon City Schools is part of our relationship," said Shawn. "We both like being involved in the school."
But their busy schedules can cause problems sometimes, too: Finding time for each other has been a struggle in the first year of marriage, Shawn said.
"That probably sounds funny, because we work together," he said. "We really don't get to spend a lot of alone time together though."
And sometimes the time they do have can be marred by a loss on the football field, Bethanie added. "Just don't speak after losses."
"Speak when spoken to after losses," he corrected, adding that the biggest lesson he's learned from Bethanie is that "cheerleading is a sport."
Some courtships seem to come sprinkled in sugar.
But it was a deadlier compound that brought Carol and Fred Sigler together.
"I worked in rat poison and flu vaccines," Carol said. "I worked with Fred in rat poison."
That was 42 years ago, when the couple worked together at Charles Pfizer Pharmaceutical in Terra Haute, Ind. Carol was raised in Terra Haute and Fred had moved there after finishing his graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin. Carol was laid off when Fred started at the company, but they met through a blind date and Carol was later rehired.
"We only went together three months and we were married," Carol said. "It was love at first sight, or at least lust at first sight."
The couple later moved to Connecticut and New York before finally ending up in Turtlecreek Twp., where both their children graduated from Lebanon High School.
"They were in everything when we were in school," Carol said.
"And we were in there with them," Fred added.
On Valentine's Day, the Siglers will celebrate 42 years of marriage at the Belterra Casino Resort and Spa in Indiana.
"When we first got married, our hobby was buying antiques," Fred said.
"Now when we travel we go to bridge tournaments," Carol said. "The first time we went to a bridge tournament, we won it."
Fred said he's the go to guy if you're looking for a bridge teacher, but when it comes to winning tricks, Carol's the master.
And the secret to maintaining a happy marriage over the course of for decades?
"She makes the decisions and then we do what I say," Fred said.
"We always agree on what Fred wants to do," Carol said, laughing.
