LEBANON — Summertime is in full swing, which for many area youths means staying up late, sleeping in, hanging at the pool and socializing with friends.
But not for Allison Scott, 11, of Sharonville and six of her friends.
This year, they've opened a traveling lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer, which will be in Lebanon from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Lebanon Ford, 770 Columbus Ave.
They've raised more than $1,100 since June.
"I didn't think anything like this would happen. When we started I thought we'd raise maybe $700,'' Allison said.
Their efforts are part of Alex's Lemonade Stand, a national foundation dedicated to raising money for pediatric cancer patients.
The foundation began in 2000 when 4-year-old cancer patient Alexandra "Alex" Scott of Philadelphia opened a lemonade stand hoping to fund a cure for her disease.
The foundation boasts that its raised more than $20 million, including $1 million raised by Alex before she died in 2004 at age 8.
Allison and her mother, Raquel, said hearing about Alex's story brought them to tears.
"I was just thinking wow, it would be great if I could help cure childhood cancer," Allison said. "I just don't think kids should die that young. I was thought that maybe me and my friends could do something."
