Shakespeare coming to area parks

Deck headlines should summarize the story and use articles, conjunctions and punctuation.

In a throwback of sorts to Shakespeare's own era, a troupe of traveling actors have been making the rounds of area parks this summer with free performances of the Bard's "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

According to Leslie Stamoolis, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company's director of education, the effort has many purposes.

For one, because so many professional theaters are dark during the summer, the Shakespeare in the Park Summer Tour gives die-hard theater fans a dose to tide them through until the season starts. Plus, it gives people a chance to see a Shakespeare play without having to pay for a ticket or travel to downtown Cincinnati.

"For many people, a Shakespeare in the Park performance is their first exposure to Shakespeare," she said.

It's not, however, the mainstage production that the CSC produced last season, Stamoolis said, but a re-mount using six actors and an abbreviated script that runs about an hour and 45 minutes.

"It's the original language," she said. "All of our productions are faithful to the First Folio, but all of them are cut to different degrees."

In this touring production, the audience travels with Shakespeare's lovers to the coast of the Hawaiian isles, and the design team uses a ship-to-shore motif to show the journey of the lovers.

"Aboard ship, the world of Athens is rigid and stiff for the lovers," said director Illana Stein. "Once they escape, the stage metamorphoses into a vibrant and enchanting mainland. The change in setting emphasizes the freedom the lovers find outside the boundaries of the Athenian law."
