With a tough economy, the staff at The Beach Waterpark in Mason knows the business of fun is a serious matter.

“In this kind of year, we have spent a lot of time evaluating who we are,” said Pamela Strickfaden, The Beach vice president and general manager. “People are going to be making choices about where to spend their money and we plan on giving our guests the most value.”

The Beach will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year when it opens Saturday, May 16.

In 1984, The Beach opened with 29 attractions, according to Strickfaden. This season, the park offers 75 attractions for its guests. And, as the park has grown over the years, so has the number of visitors. In 1985, there were 1,500 season pass holders compared to almost 20,000 in 2009, according to Strickfaden.

To prepare for this season’s opening, The Beach received a “face lift,” according to marketing manager Kate Storch.

“We’ve gone through the entire park to make it sparkling,” Storch said. “We’ve got more ocean sand and more palm trees. There will be a new dance floor next to our Kokomo stage. There will be many new things to experience here.”

The Beach will celebrate its 25th anniversary by offering nostalgic memories of the 1980s. Music, game days, movies and even price specials will tie into the ’80s theme.

Other notable events include a concert series which runs every Friday through Sunday in July and August. Each night will feature a different style of music including surf rock, salsa and reggae.

The Beach is located at 2590 Water Park Drive, Mason. Opening weekend is Friday and Saturday,
May 16-17 and daily hours start May 23.
