Candidates lining up to replace Kilburn

LEBANON — For the first time in more than a quarter of a century, in 2010 Mike Kilburn’s name will not appear on the Republican primary for a Warren County position.

Kilburn, a 28-year veteran county commissioner, often pontificates during commission meetings about how poorly he believes the state and federal governments are run. Now, he’s decided to challenge Jean Schmidt for the 2nd District congressional seat in May 2010.

His recent announcement was not a surprise to the GOP candidates already raising campaign funds to take his spot. Former Warren County Sheriff Tom Ariss, Mason Mayor Tom Grossmann and Carlisle Mayor Tim Humphries have announced they will run.

Ariss said he has already received calls from former Kilburn supporters who now want to back him.

“The folks that have already contacted us have said, ‘we know who you are and what you’re for and you’ve got a good track record that we like,’ ” he said.

Ariss was the first to file petitions and he said he has raised about $10,000.

Grossmann kicked off his campaign during Mason’s Heritage Festival in September. He said although he has already raised upward of $30,000, his campaign won’t go into full swing until after Tuesday’s election.

Grossmann was term limited off the Mason council. He said Kilburn’s departure won’t change the way he runs for the office.

“I’m going to run just as hard and raise just as much money,” he said. “My team is prepared and we are continuing to get out in the community.”

Newly appointed state Rep. Pete Beck, R-Mason, who challenged Kilburn in the 2006 primary, spent $184,888 trying to unseat the commissioner. Kilburn spent $30,807 and kept the office.

Humphries said he has been concentrating on the Carlisle City Council races, where he might have four new council members. He hasn’t started fund raising yet, but says money should not be the determinative factor in the race.

Vote for Bailey! Vote for change! Worked for Obama.

“I’m not going to buy the election," he said. “The numbers I hear are ridiculous when it comes to any kind of a county campaign."

This would be the end quote of the article from the western-star. I would like to why this was the only thing cut ?
