LEBANON — A new initiative in Lebanon City Schools invites alumni to donate old jerseys, graduation programs, photos and other historic school-related items to preserve and display in the future.
The schools’ historical committee had its first meeting last month at the Warren County Historical Society, where donated items will be kept. The effort has already resulted in some past graduates digging up items out of drawers, attics and closets.
Marilyn Slorp, a 1947 graduate, has sent in several items, including a framed photo of her graduating class, her diploma and a 1947 edition of the Lebanon Light.
“They can tell so many stories,” Slorp said. “If we lose our history, as older people pass away, there will be nothing for the younger people to refer to.”
The items and their donors are being recorded into a database to make it easier to track them later on, said Becky Hill, the district’s curriculum director who is voluntarily leading the collection effort.
The items are being stored at the historical society, but when enough artifacts are collected, Hill said they would like to display the items for the community, possibly in cabinets at the junior high auditorium.
The committee has been meeting for about a year, and has received valuable advice and guidance from Vicky Tappy, executive director of the historical society.
“Anytime you preserve the historical nature of any part of the community, it helps you know where we were, where we are now and where we will be in the future,” said Esther Larson, school board and committee member.
To donate items, contact Becky Hill at (513) 934-5776. Donors are given a deed of gift and each donation will be recognized by the Lebanon Board of Education.
