Lebanon receives $24,800 to build a dog park

Lebanon’s four-legged citizens have something to wag their tails about.

The city of Lebanon was awarded a $24,800 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’s Nature Work’s program to construct a dog park in the city. Deputy City Manager Scott Brunka said that the award was a matching grant, meaning the city must come up with its own $24,800 for the park.

Brunka said the board of parks and recreation would meet this week to discuss potential sponsorship and other fundraising opportunities.

Brunka said a dog park had been planned in the city’s parks master plan — a study the city commissioned in 2008.

The park is scheduled to be placed in the Tecumseh Trails park off of Cook Road, south of downtown Lebanon. Brunka said the city has 18 months to implement the park according to the grant’s guidelines and hoped to have it completed in 2010. He said among the needs for the park were to create a fenced area and a small parking lot for visitors.

Brunka said the city was studying other local dog parks for the best ideas on construction, upkeep and sponsorship.

Good financial decisions?? Was it a good financial decision to take money from the street repair fund to fix railroad tracks for a train that is operated by a private business? We all use the streets everyday, but how many of us have rode the train?

Not that long ago, I thought I read an article about Lebanon's budgetary issues. Spending public dollars, even if only $25,000, at this time is tough given other priorities. Hopefully, the private sector will pitch in to accomplish this as Mr. Brunka suggests.

I think Lebanon is a wonderful city and generally makes good fiscal decisions.
I have to say though, that at a time like this, with so many families struggling, that raising money and accepting grant/tax money for a dog park is irresponsible. It's like buying toys for your dog when you can't afford any for your kids. It is actually worse because tax money should not be spent for these types of projects at all. They chould only be implemented if private donations can foot the bill.
