Jim Morris’ Fishing Report for April 9

Hot Topics

By Jim Morris, Staff Writer 12:52 AM Thursday, April 9, 2009

Note

: The recent cold, wet weather has curtailed fishing. In the following report, conditions often are described for the days prior to the poor weather.

-----

Grand Lake St. Marys

: Crappie fishing continues to be good in the channels around brush, boat docks and boat lifts. Use minnows or small jigs and fish 1-2 feet deep. Bluegills are starting to bite, mostly on waxworms and redworms. For catfish use nightcrawlers and cut shad.

Paint Creek Lake

: The water level is up and all boat ramps are in use. Fish in the creek arms for crappies along the banks in the brush and around laydowns. Use minnows or small jigs and fish 3-5 feet deep. For bass, use green/pumpkinseed lizards or jigs or spinners and work the rock ledges. Plenty of saugeyes and crappies have been caught in the tailwaters, mostly on twisters.

Rocky Fork Lake

: Fish for crappies at 4-9 feet deep around brush and laydowns. Bass have been hitting small crankbaits. Plenty of bluegills have been caught in the coves, mostly on waxworms.

C.J. Brown Reservoir

: Fish near the rocks or over the humps for walleyes, jigging with Vib-E’s or trolling with a crawler harness. A few white bass have been caught from the northern part of the lake, mostly on crappie minnows. For crappies, fish around the marina with minnows. Several small mouths have been caught by crappie fishermen.

Clark Lake

: Trout fishing continues to be good. Use waxworms or Powerbaits. Bass and bluegill fishing have also been good.

Acton Lake

: For largemouth bass, use plastics with a slow presentation along the banks. Crappies are still 10-12 feet deep and hitting minnows and jigs. Saugeye fishing has slowed.

Rush Run Lake

: Trout fishing is still very good. Use Powerbaits, waxworms or marshmallows. A few bass have been caught, mostly on plastics.

Indian Lake

: Good crappie fishing has been reported in the old game reserve, around Long Island and Pony Island. Use minnows or waxworms. Saugeye fishing has been off-and-on off of the South Bank, Lakeview and Moundwood. Use minnows, nightcrawlers and Vib-E’s.

Caesar Creek Lake

: Saugeyes are being caught from shallow water all around the lake. Jig with large minnows or pieces of nightcrawler or use Vib-E’s. Crappies are still deep, 12-15 feet. Try jigging with minnows around structure. Try tossing musky lures into shallow water to catch muskies.

Lake Erie

: Wind and cold weather have slowed early spring walleye fishing in the western basin. Prior to the poor weather jig anglers were catching fish on many of the Camp Perry reefs and trollers were having success around the eastern cans of the Camp Perry range. When conditions stabilize fishing should improve. The water temperature is 44 off of Toledo and 40 off of Cleveland.

For Lake Erie information, call (888) HOOK-FISH or visit wildohio.com.

Maumee River

: When the cold weather moved in, fishing dropped off considerably. The water level is up, so anglers are not able to cross to Blue Grass Island, a favorite spot. The best areas have been Buttonwood, Side Cut Park and Fort Meigs. For information, visit maumeetackle.net or wildohio.com or call (888) HOOK-FISH or (419) 407-9731.

Sandusky River

: The water level is up a little, so conditions are the best they have been this spring. As long as it stays up, some walleyes should be caught from the State Street Bridge to the Hayes Bridge in Fremont. For information, call (419) 332-6071 or visit wildohio.com.

I was wondering how to submit photos to your fishing report. I have a picture of a 4.25 pound Largemouth Bass that I caught yesterday 4\19 that I would like to send in. Thanks for your help, Bill Burns
