SPRINGFIELD — South High School graduate Jerrid Gaines signed a free-agent contract with the Cleveland Browns on Sunday night, April 27, and to celebrate, he took a nap.

"I was just tired from watching the draft," Gaines said on Monday. "I watched the whole thing."

Gaines said the Browns called him during the seventh round to tell him they weren't going to draft him, but wanted to bring him to camp as a free agent.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs also offered Gaines free-agent contracts.

"The Browns had the best opportunity for me to help out and contribute right away," Gaines said. "They need a cornerback."

The 5-foot-11, 193-pound Gaines had 43 tackles and an interception last fall in his final season at Miami University.
