WESTERVILLE — The Lakota West High girls basketball team is in a class by itself after earning a berth in the Division I state tournament.

No Firebirds' hoops team — boys or girls — has ever advanced to the state tournament since the Lakota district split in 1997.

Extras

Last season's West girls squad lost in the regional finals to Mt. Notre Dame (58-49).

Gray closing in on Lakota record

West senior Amber Gray is just 18 points shy of tying the Lakota district's all-time scoring record held by East grad James Dews (1,906).

Gray's 10 points against Dublin Coffman gives her 1,888 for her career, including 480 this season.

Youngstown Boardman next for Firebirds

West will face Youngstown Boardman in the state semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday, March 7 in the first of two semifinal games that night. MND and Toledo Central Catholic tip-off at 8 p.m. in the other semi.

The Spartans (19-7) needed overtime to upend Warren Howland (22-4) in the final of the Canton regional 43-35.

"Part of our goal is accomplished," Gray said. "Unless you take it all home, it doesn't mean anything. We're getting ready for the next game, and we'll work hard in practice this week."
