Alter's Chris Borland is projected as an outside linebacker at Wisconsin even though he never played the position in high school.
KETTERING — It took Chris Borland less than an hour to make his decision to play college football at the University of Wisconsin.
"I knew in my heart it was the place I wanted to play," said the Alter High School senior-to-be. "But I wanted to call my dad (Jeff Borland) and make sure he agreed with it. He was happy with my decision."
Borland, a 6-foot, 215-pounder, gave a verbal commitment to play for the Badgers on Tuesday, June 24. Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema made a scholarship offer to him at the end of a two-day camp he was attending in Madison, Wis. A quick phone call and it was a done deal.
He will be the third area player on the Wisconsin roster. Shane Carter is a junior defensive back and Jake Current a freshman center. Both went to Troy High School.
A running back at Alter, Borland is projected as an outside linebacker at Wisconsin even though he has never played the position in high school.
"The only time I've played it is the different camps I've been this spring," Borland said. "I've put in time working on the pass drops and all the things a linebacker does.
"I'm still working hard on the footwork and the covering and reads and stuff. I think it will all come together this high school season."
Borland had attended camps at Miami University, Indiana and Purdue. He also had interest from Illinois, Iowa, Virginia and Louisville. Wisconsin was his first scholarship offer.
"I could have waited, but Wisconsin is my dream school," he said. "My grandfather graduated from Wisconsin. My dad lived there until his family moved when he was a teenager and we still have a lot of family in the state.
"They only have 16 scholarships to give this year. So I figured when they offered I should grab it before they offered it to someone else."
Borland, fifth in the Division II state shot put, ran for 633 yards and nine touchdowns last season. He also punted and caught 10 passes for 124 yards and a TD for the 11-1 Knights.
"Coach Bielema thought I could be an H-Back or fullback," said Borland, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.65 seconds. "I could also be a punter. I'll do whatever it takes to get on the field.
"I'm happy to have the decision out of the way. I've been at camps the last week and I would have been at Illinois today (Thursday, June 26) if I hadn't committed.
"Now I can relax for a while before I start lifting again and getting ready for the season."
Borland, one of seven children, will be the fifth boy in the family to participate in college athletics.
His oldest brother, Joe, was a soccer player at Miami University. Mark played basketball at Wittenberg. John was a soccer player at West Point. He is currently a 2nd Lt. in the Army preparing to ship out to Iraq. Matt is a senior at Wittenberg and was an NCAA Division III All-American last fall.
"The biggest thing that impresses people about Chris is his athletic ability and his attitude," said Alter coach Ed Domsitz. "Wisconsin will be very happy with him no matter what side of the ball he's on."

Are you kidding me? Fairmont gets beat by Alter and everyone else because they lack coaching and players desire to commit to winning.

Great job by the Chris! All your hard work paid off and Wisconsin is getting a great player. Too bad Miami U screwed around in trying to decide what to do with someone with potential defensive talent but great running back ability.

I know it’s been a few years since I’ve been to an Alter-Fairmont game, but has Fairmont even been close in the last 10 years? I usually check the score around the last week of August and it seems that overpopulated Fairmont gets romped on every year by the 750 student body at Alter. And does Stebbins even still field a football team?

It’s so funny to see all the classless losers on here trying to take a cheap anonymous jab at a kid who worked hard and got a scholarship offer. Typical Fairmont and uneducated public school football jocks. Jealousy will get you no where. Work hard, shut your mouth, and grow your potential. But don’t sit on some internet board and talk crap. There’s a reason he had to go so far away to get an offer. Too small to play offense. He will bet blown away by the speed and size of the D-Line of OSU and others if he tries to play H-Back. Way to small for linebacker. He’s gonna be the pancake special at I-Hop, or make that I-Limp when he meets the offensive linemen of the Big (Huge) 10.

Chris, what a great accomplishment! You have been so blessed with having such a great family to support your dreams. It has been great reading about your success and hearing about it from your proud father as soon as you could throw a shot-put. Congratulations Chris, I am extremely grateful for being able to see you play, you are one of the great players Alter has seen in a few years. Alter has been lucky enough to get a kid like you. Wisconsin will be a good fit for you. Just remember to love the game for what it is, a game of chance, and a game of opportunity.
