MYBA HOLDING BOYS BASKETBALL TRYOUTS: Tryouts for the Middletown Youth Basketball Association third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade boys basketball teams will take place Oct. 1-3 at Wade E. Miller Gym. Third- and fourth-graders will try out at 5:30 p.m. each day, while the fifth- and sixth-graders will try out at 6:30 p.m. each day. All boys who reside in the Middletown Local School District, including students at John XXIII, Middletown Christian and Middletown Prep, are eligible. The teams will play in the Dayton Metro Youth program for the second straight year, playing a 20-game regular season. Games will start the first week of December and go until the last week in February. INDOOR SLO PITCH LEAGUE FORMING: The All-Ohio Indoor Slo Pitch League is now being formed and will begin play Oct. 22 at Wall-2-Wall in Mason. BUTLER COUNTY BLAZERS COMBINE: The Butler County Blazers will be hosting a combine for the 2008 season beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday at Franklin's Atrium Stadium. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Cost is $30 for any player 18 years or older that is interested in playing organized football. Players will be evaluated in the 40-yard dash, short shuttles, 3 cone drill and individual poisition drills. For more information, call Dustin Howard at (513) 292-6265.

GOLF SKILLS CHALLENGE AT MCGEE'S: The second annual Mike McGee barbecue and golf skills challenge will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Mike McGee Teaching Center and Golf Range, 5670 W. Alexandria Road in Madison Township. Former PGA Tour player McGee will host a clinic at 4 p.m. and then at 5 p.m. Steve Griffith, the 2005 Senior World Long Drive Champion will do a show. Lunch is $8 and there will be several competitions on hand, including long drive, chipping and putting contests for kids and adults. At 6 p.m. McGee will become a target as part of the "Hit Me In The Jeep" event. During the challenge, all range balls will be half price. Call the center at (513) 422-0837 for more details.

BLUE CARDS AVAILABLE FROM HHS: Hamilton High School's Big Blue football team is running its annual fund-raiser. Blue Cards (discount cards) are available at the high school athletic office or from junior high and high school football players. MERCURIO CLASSIC SET FOR SEPT. 28: The Miami University baseball and men's basketball programs will be hosting the eighth annual Jamie Mercurio Skin The Hawk Golf Classic on Sept. 28 at Indian Ridge Golf Club. This fundraiser is open to all friends of MU athletics. The $150 registration fee includes 18 holes of golf, cart, driving range, adidas golf shirt, post-event awards and door prizes. FAIRFIELD HOF BANQUET SATURDAY: The annual Fairfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame banquet will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Receptions in Fairfield. MAGIC JOHNSON BASKETBALL CAMP NEARS: The Mercy HealthPlexes at Fairfield and Anderson will be hosting the Triple Threat Basketball Camp on Sept. 29-30. The Triple Threat Basketball Camp is sponsored by Magic Johnson Basketball and is coordinated and directed by Larry Johnson, brother of NBA Hall of Famer Earvin "Magic" Johnson. The camp will be co-directed by former University of Cincinnati Bearcat basketball player Alex Meacham. The camps are open to boys and girls ages 7-17. The players will be grouped by age and skill level. Two separate Triple Threat Camps will be offered. Camp 1 will be held from 8-11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30, at the Anderson Mercy HealthPlex. Camp 2 is from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30 at the Fairfield Mercy HealthPlex. Each camp is $89 per camper, $69 for HealthPlex Members and Mercy Employees. Registration is available by phone by calling (513) 942-PLEX (942-7539) or you can register at the Concierge Desk at the Mercy HealthPlexes at either the Anderson or Fairfield locations.

NFL PUNT, PASS AND KICK EVENT IN HAMILTON: The Hamilton Parks and Recreation Department will host a local round of the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 29 at Virgil Schwarm Stadium, 1165 Eaton Road, in Hamilton. The free event is open to boys and girls ages 8-15, and age classification is as of Dec. 31, 2007. A copy of the participant's birth certificate is required on the day of the event. VOLLEY FOR A CURE T-SHIRTS ON SALE: Fairfield and Sycamore High Schools are selling Volley for the Cure T-shirts to raise money to help those with breast cancer. Shirts are $5 each. All fans wearing a 2007 Volley for the Cure T-shirt to the Oct. 4 girls volleyball contest between the two teams, at 7 p.m. at Sycamore High, will get in for free. A raffle for many nice gifts will also take place. All proceeds will be donated by both schools to help those with breast cancer.

MIDDLETOWN YOUTH GIRLS HOOP CLINICS SET: Any Middletown girl in grades 3-6 interested in playing basketball this winter is invited to a free clinic, which will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Middletown Community Center and from 7 to 8 p.m. at Paul Walker Gym each Monday through Oct. 8. SALVATION ARMY TO HOST YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUES: Youth basketball leagues are being formed at the Salvation Army in Hamilton. Boys ages 6-12 and girls ages 6-14 are eligible. Open sign-ups will be held at the Salvation Army on Oct. 6 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the gym. The registration deadline is Oct. 22. FAIRFIELD OFFERING SENIOR CITIZEN PASSES: The Fairfield City School District is offering special VIP passes to all senior citizens who reside in Fairfield. The VIP pass provides free admission to all school-sponsored events that do not requite reserved seats, at any Fairfield City School. Passes are available at the Fairfield High School Athletic Office every school day from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone interested in obtaining a VIP pass should bring a document to show proof of residence. ADOPT AN ATHLETE PROGRAM CAN HELP AREA OLYMPIAN: Fans and area businesses who would like to help send Middletown athlete Kayla Harrison to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games can do so by contacting USA Judo at (719) 866-4730. Harrison is the second-ranked women's judo fighter in the country in her weight class, and is currently training with two-time Olympian Jimmy Pedro in Wakefield, Mass. Private and corporate donations are always welcome.
