HAMILTON — Chilly air and a brisk breeze were no match for the warmth of emotions surrounding the Opening Day ceremonies at West Side Little League on Saturday, April 12.

Mayor Don Ryan was among those on hand to watch the festivities, which included an audio tribute to legendary Reds pitcher and broadcaster Joe Nuxhall, who passed away in November.

Kim and Bonnie Nuxhall were there to represent the Nuxhall family, with Kim, Joe's son, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

"Nothing excited Dad more last year than watching this West Side Little League team make it to the World Series," Kim said. "He was really into it. He was right there with them on every pitch."

Christian Sheffstall had the honor of catching Kim Nuxhall's first pitch, while Hamilton High School senior Cody Smallwood sang the national

anthem. Austin Sapp recited the

Little League Pledge, and the Butler County Combined Color Guard presented the colors.

Last year's Ohio and Great Lakes Region champions also took the field and received a large commemorative sign that will hang on Field No. 3.

"Thank you, West Side Little League," manager Tim Nichting said. "It makes me feel really good inside when I think about all the support you've given us this last year."

While all the action was going on near the pitcher's mound, the current group of West Side players was lined up around the infield.

"I can't help but look at these kids and wonder if there's another Joe Nuxhall among them," Kim said. "Or another Mark Lewis or Ricky Stone or Aaron Cook. I'm sure there is.

"I just want you all to remember to work hard, be respectful and be responsible," he continued. "And to all you coaches out there, keep in mind that it's just game, and it should be all about fun."
