Waynesville's first round game in the Dayton Division II girls soccer sectional tournament was more of a tune-up than a contest.

The Spartans mowed through Xenia Christian, 10-0, setting up a second-round showdown tonight, Oct. 16, at home, with Springfield Catholic Central.

"We got a lot of different kids playing time and a lot of different kids contributed," Waynesville coach Dick Miller said. "Now, we'll see what we do in the next round.

"We feel pretty positive about the game. In fact, I'm pretty confident that this team can win a district title this year. Certainly, there are no patsies left, we can be beat by anybody. But, I feel we can beat any of them, too," he said.

McKenna Warfel got the shutout in goal against Xenia Christian, with solid defensive play from Chandler Gianattasio and Elysha Bacca as well as outstanding midfield play from Lauren Bunn and Liz Elson.

Waynesville's defense has gotten a boost in the last six games since moving freshman Hannah Warfel into the sweeper position.

Amber Bell led the Spartans' offense, scoring four goals — including the first three of the game — and adding two assists.

Also scoring for the Spartans were Maggie Dowe, Lauren Price, Elson, Megan Fitzpatrick, Katie Hamilton and A.J. Rickey. Assists were recorded by Price (3), Farran Eide (2), Autumn Adams, Elysha Bacca and Chandler Gianattasio.

With the win, Waynesville improved to 12-2-3 on the season.
